Peru President’s sister-in-law investigated for alleged corruption

Peru’s Public Ministry has opened an investigation into the sister-in-law of President Pedro Castillo for alleged corruption.

Public Ministry Prosecutor Jony Peña opened the preliminary investigation of Yenifer Paredes, the sister of First Girl Lilia Paredes, on Monday. 

The prosecutor is wanting into whether or not Ms. Paredes has used her ties to the president to assist her win public works contracts for corporations she’s affiliated with. Ms. Paredes isn’t listed as an official in Castillo’s authorities. 

The inquiry reportedly stems from a video which aired on June 3 on information present Cuarto Poder which allegedly exhibits Ms. Paredes providing to handle public works initiatives in La Succha, a neighborhood in northern Peru, whereas sporting a shirt with the brand of JJM Espino Engineering and Building S.A.C. and sitting subsequent to the corporate’s basic supervisor. (It’s unclear at the moment if Ms. Paredes has a proper work relationship with the engineering agency).

In September 2021, two months after Mr. Castillo’s election to the presidency, JJM Espino Engineering and Building S.A.C. was awarded a USD $1 million state contract to assist with public works for the restoration and equipping of a faculty in Cajatambo, 300 kilometers north of Lima. There have been no reviews to date linking this contract again to Ms. Paredes. 

What the prosecutor goals to analyze is whether or not there’s any connection between public contracts awarded to JJM Espino Engineering and Building S.A.C. and Ms. Paredes. And whether or not Ms. Paredes acted appropriately in any potential dealings when negotiating the contracts.

The Cuarto Poder report additionally revealed that Hugo Espino, the managing director of the agency, made 5 visits to the Authorities Palace (the President’s residence) between August and November of 2021, and for a type of visits he was accompanied by Yenifer Paredes, and for an additional he was joined by the First Girl. The Public Ministry has since introduced that it’s reviewing the visitor logs of the Authorities Palace. 

The anti-corruption legal professional Javier Pacheco stated that Ms. Paredes, if discovered responsible, may face a most of six years in jail. The Ombudsman’s Workplace has referred to as for an exhaustive investigation into the sister-in-law’s dealings.
